FOH Engineer John Kerns Praises Audio-Technica’s Performance On No Doubt Tour

For the past 15 years, the unique musical style of No Doubt has kept them on the cutting edge of the rapidly evolving pop culture scene. Formed in early 1987, No Doubt started out playing the party-band circuit around their hometown of Anaheim, CA. The group’s diverse appeal and energetic performances attracted regional interest, and No Doubt were signed to Interscope Records in 1991. The band’s 1995 breakthrough Tragic Kingdom, which sold over 10 million albums worldwide, officially launched No Doubt as international superstars. While on tour in support of their latest release, Rock Steady, FOH (front-of-house) engineer John Kerns, who has worked with Bruce Springsteen, Shania Twain, Sammy Hagar, Styx, Ringo Starr, and Stevie Nicks, chose a wide range of Audio-Technica microphones to cover just about every base on the stage.

“I actually began using Audio-Technica microphones a bit later than a lot of people,” recalls Kerns. “I had decided to try some different microphone options, and kept running into all these A-T mics at the TV shows and large events. I thought they all sounded great, so I contacted Audio-Technica and got a selection of mics to try when No Doubt went into production rehearsals. I immediately liked what I heard!”

Kerns used a broad array of A-T microphones on all aspects of No Doubt’s stage setup. For Gwen Stefani’s vocals on the large shows, Kerns chose the new Artist Elite™ 4000 Series wireless system, which comprises the AEW-R4100 receiver and AEW-T6100 hypercardioid dynamic microphone/transmitter. On Adrian Young’s drum kits, Kerns utilized an ATM23 for snare bottom and cowbell, AT3035’s for overheads, and AT3031’s on hi-hats. AT4060 and ATM25 mics were used for Tom Dumont’s guitars, and an AT4047 was employed for Tony Kanal’s bass guitar cabinet. In addition, No Doubt did a live acoustic show on KROQ radio for which Kerns chose the AE3000’s for percussion (congas, bongos, etc.), AE5100’s on hi-hat and percussion overheads (hand toys), and the ATM25 for kick and snare. Kerns also decided to use an Artist Elite 4000 Series wireless system with the new AEW-T3300 handheld condenser transmitter for Stefani’s vocals on this acoustic show.

When Kerns reflects on his experiences using Audio-Technica mics with No Doubt, he sums up his feelings by saying, “I gotta tell you, the consistency is great, the sound is great, and the durability is pretty amazing. I took only one of the AT4060 tube mics out with us, and I carried that thing all over the world — two U.S. tours, a summer jaunt through the European festivals, Asia, Australia, checked the mic on airplanes, freight, et cetera…it held up beautifully and never had a problem. In fact, all of the A-T mics held up great through the year!”

I realize that I have not made a post in quite a while. Sorry about that. As some of you know, I have been playing drums for many different bands lately. I appreciate all of those people that have come to see me play with Bow Wow Wow, Oslo, and Bing Ji Ling. Now it is time for No Doubt to play live again. We have not played live in about a year. We are doing a couple of television performances and I am totally excited to play "Its My Life" live for the first time. Let's hear it for Tom and Mieke!! I am very happy about their engagement. I am honored and feel that we are fortunate to be at a place in our career where we can put out a "best of" type of album as well as a box set. What a milestone for our band!! My wife says that I should mention what a twat I am. So there! And to close, my tip of the day is if you work in the service industry, please smile to customers once in while. I was in San Francisco recently and I came across many food businesses, etc. where the people working were consistently unfriendly. When people are spending money, they generally want their asses kissed a little. So even if you think that you are the coolest person in the world, give courtesy a try.

(10/15/03, 6 p.m. ET) -- No Doubt has announced the songs for their first greatest-hits collection, which is called the Singles 1992-2003. The album comes out November 25 and contains 15 tracks, including the group's recently recorded cover of Talk Talk's

"It's My Life." The Southern California-based band will also be releasing the concert

DVD Rock Steady Live on November 25.

A special edition box set, dubbed Boom Box, also comes out on November 25. Boom Box will contain the Singles 1992-2003, the Rock Steady Live DVD, a CD of rare tracks,

and the DVD the Videos: 1992-2003--a collection of the group's videos through the years.

The tracklisting for the Singles 1992-2003 includes: "Just A Girl," "It's My Life," "Hey Baby" (featuring Bounty Killer), "Bathwater," "Sunday Morning," "Hella Good," "New," "Underneath It All" (featuring Lady Shaw), "Excuse Me Mr.," "Running," "Spiderwebs,"

Adrian Young to drum for reunited New Wavers
British New Wave combo Bow Wow Wow are joining forces with No Doubt drummer Adrian Young for Los Angeles radio station KROQ's Inland Invasion concert September 20th. The show marks the end of a hiatus for Bow Wow Wow, first put together in the early Eighties by Sex Pistols svengali Malcolm McClaren.
Momentum for the reunion built up as original members singer Annabella Lwin and bassist Leigh Gorman had agreed to play the show, but drummer Dave Barbarossa was tied up with touring commitments, forcing them to look elsewhere to fill out the band's distinctive rhythm section. "It seemed everyone was telling me [to ask] Adrian from No Doubt," Gorman says. "I thought, 'No Doubt? They're a good band, but it's very demanding drumming.'"

"It's fucking difficult," adds Lwin, referring to the band's trademark tribal drum sound. "If you don't get a good drummer, then forget about it. You haven't got a show."

Young was contacted for the slot via No Doubt's booking agent. "He called me and said, 'Bow Wow Wow don't have a drummer. Would you be able to do it?'" Young remembers. "Fuck yeah! I loved them when I was younger."

Young and Bow Wow Wow, also featuring guitarist Phil Gough (original guitarist Matthew Ashman passed away due to complications from diabetes in 1995), have been rehearsing since August for the gig, revving up hits including "Baby, Oh No," "Aphrodisiac," "Do You Wanna Hold Me," "C30, C60, C90, Go!" and their classic cover of the Strangeloves' "I Want Candy."

The band has even been sharing practice space with No Doubt, who are recording new material for Singles 1992-2003, due out in November.

"I've been back and forth between Bow Wow Wow rehearsals and No Doubt recordings," Young says. "I come in with the attitude of 'I'll do whatever you want me to do. I'm going to be happy just playing the parts.' It's just a different attitude. No baggage. Coming in fresh and clean."

Bow Wow Wow are currently mulling over pitches to continue touring beyond the KROQ gig. "We've been offered loads of stuff," Lwin says. "The most important thing is for the audience get into it. That's why you do music -- to inspire people."

(9/8/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- In No Doubt's 1995 hit single "Just A Girl," lead singer Gwen Stefani sarcastically sang "the moment that I step outside, so many reasons for me to run and hide." Eight years later, the blonde singer has decided to step out from hiding with the impending release of her first solo album. And if those working with her on the project are any indication, expect the forthcoming set to have a very hip-hop feel.

Interscope Records has brought in Missy Elliott and Outkast to help guide Stefani's debut effort. Elliott warned MTV, "It's not just another record. It's going to be an event." Expect the album to be released in the spring of 2004.

Stefani has taken on several high profile projects since No Doubt announced it was going on hiatus after winning their first Grammy Award in February. She's released a line of handbags and accessories on her L.A.M.B. label, and she's set to co-star in her first feature film. Stefani portrays the blonde bombshell Jean Harlow in the upcoming Howard Hughes bio-pic the Aviator, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, and John C. Reilly.
The film is slated for a December of 2004 release

All eyes were on No Doubt front woman Gwen Stefani as she launched her new line of L.A.M.B. accessories, attending the kick-off bash wearing a stunning ensemble she created herself.

The all-white outfit – a wrap top and low-slung trousers paired with a military belt – is among the looks fashionistas can expect from Gwen's upcoming clothing range. "It's my own design," she confirmed. "I finally got my first samples."

Gwen's line of funky garments won't be available until spring 2004, so for now style savvy shoppers will have to settle for the L.A.M.B. collection of carry-alls, which range in price from $20 to $158. The trendy accessories, which were a joint effort between Gwen and LeSportsac, feature such original elements as chrome detailing and guitar straps for handles.

Hey Everyone,Sorry it's been such a long time since I’ve posted. I wanted to say hello and fill you in on what we have been up to lately. Even though we are taking some time off from performing we have all been keeping pretty busy. As you know, in addition to working on her own album, Gwen has been getting her clothing line LAMB ready for a Spring 2004 launch. She also just filmed the first portion of her role in the film "The Aviator" directed by Martin Scorcese. Tom has been surfing and working in his home studio with the talented Matt Costa. Go to mattcosta.com to check out some of the tunes they did together. Adrian has been hitting the celebrity pro-golf circuit, playing with Gabe's band OSLO (osloband.com) and also rehearsing with the amazing Bow Bow Wow. If you live in Southern California you can see him play drums with them on September 20 at KROQ's Inland Invasion III show in Devore (check out kroq.com for more details). As for me, I have been working in my home studio as well, helping Gwen with her album and writing with my friend Elan Atias for his album.Now to the band…we have been working on getting a bunch of stuff together. Firstly, we are going to be releasing our "Singles 1992-2003" CD. We're in the studio this week with producer Nellee Hooper recording a cover version of one our favorite 80's songs for it. We also just completed putting together the "Rock Steady Live" DVD which features one of last year's Long Beach Arena shows as well as tons of bonus stuff. Also in the works is a limited edition box set which will include the "Singles 1992-2003" CD, a DVD featuring all our of videos, "Live In The Tragic Kingdom" on DVD (yes, finally!), and a "B-Sides & Rare Tracks" CD which may also include a couple of unreleased tracks (yes, New Friend should be on there as well). We're hoping to get all of this stuff out by the end of the year. We'll keep you posted with release dates once we know them for sure.

GRR here and I just want to let you all know that I finally figured out how to post from my computer whenever I want.
I am sort of addicted to the whole thing and really enjoy reading all your positive words.If there are any hackers or imposters we will ban them. We have had this problem in the past but have people that are constantly watching the site. No one can use our ND icons and we each have a private password so if you see the gold and black ND by any of our names you can be sure it is one of us. Everyone at my label and management has been calling to see if it is really me as well. I must be crazy like you but for now I'm really into this game. I'm in LA casually writing and relaxing and enjoying the behind the scenes life. I wake up when I want, eat what I want, work out if I want, wear makeup if I want, write songs if I want. Don't ask me where I've been. I had a couple of challenging weeks. Things are getting better. I have been in the studio with Dallas Austin trying to write some songs. Long hours 9:30 pm till 4 or 5 in the morning. Sounds like a lot of fun but hard. I feel exhausted. We wrote some pretty cool songs. Need to find some words hope they come. Good news is I had two days off. Tomorrow I start back up with Linda. We started some songs and now were going to finish them. LAMB is taking up most of my days it is really getting exciting and I get my first samples this month. So much going on.

Hey everyone, Gwen here. Tom, Tony and Adrian will be checking in here soon but I wanted to drop you a little note to let you know what I am up to.The last 18 months were so incredible. After having done the songs with Moby and Eve we recorded the "Rock Steady" record all over the world with so many amazing people. Then, after the MTV Awards (and 9/11) we were lucky enough to go on tour with U2. The next twelve months was a blur for me with so many amazing first time experiences finishing with us getting to play "Message in a Bottle" with Sting at the Super Bowl and then performing at the Grammys where we actually won an award! Oh yeah, did I tell you I got married?? Married life is bliss, by the way.After all that I figured I would just chill in London with my husband but interesting things keep popping up. I have been working super hard on my L.A.M.B. clothing line. I think you will start to hear more about it and see it soon. It has been a total blast and a lot of work but it has also been a real cool creative outlet. I have also looked at some scripts and, although I really haven't made a decision yet, if the right part were to come along I think I would try working in film. I have always had a real love for making videos and the filmmaking No Doubt did. Who knows? I think it might be another challenging place to express myself creatively.I have also been collaborating on some tracks on my own with different people. I am not quite sure if it will become a full-blown solo project, singles for a soundtrack or just songs (like with Moby and Eve). I am just kind of letting it take me where it takes me and see what happens. It is all part of a process for me, sort of an extension of the challenge No Doubt gave ourselves on "Rock Steady." I want to explore all of this during the No Doubt hiatus. We'll see where it takes me!Thanks again for all your support over the past 16 years and specifically during the whole "Rock Steady" record. No Doubt rocks the Super Bowl. At Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif., the band performs "Just A Girl" and accompanies Sting for the Police classic "Message In A Bottle" - in front of millions!! On their way home, they stop by Laguna Beach, Calif. to shoot their fourth Rock Steady video for the song "Running."

Three is a charm!! No Doubt, after many nominations and years attending, finally bounced away from the Grammys with a coveted award . After performing a medley of "Underneath It All" and "Hella Good," the band was awarded their first Grammy ever for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal for "Hey Baby." And, in a tribute to the late Joe Strummer, Tony jammed with Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Dave Grohl, Steve Van Zandt and Pete Thomas for a rockin' cover of The Clash's "London Calling.

Soooo excited about their big win, No Doubt took to the stage for a club show at New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom. Not only did the lucky crowd get treated to No Doubt classics, but they also sang along covers of the Police's "Message In A Bottle" with guests Brandon Boyd and Mike Einziger of Incubus, and U2's "Sweetest Thing" with a guest appearance by Gavin.

The Zildjian Company announced the addition of the new Adrian Young Artist Series Model to its line of drumsticks designed by the world's top drummers.

Developed with the insight of the dynamic drummer for the popular band, No Doubt, the Adrian Young Artist Series Model is excellent for a wide range of musical applications. This full-sized stick is 0.585 inches in diameter and 16 1/2 inches long, which provides an excellent balance and strong throw to the stick. The uniquely angled nylon bead provides extra durability and clear projection.

Consistent with the extremely visual element of No Doubt, the stick is stained a vibrant "Rocksteady" bright red and Adrian's name is printed on the stick in signature No Doubt text with a great checkerboard graphic. The stick is constructed from U.S. Select Hickory at the Zildjian Drumstick Factory in Moundville, Al.
After joining No Doubt in 1989, Adrian quickly proved himself to be a very solid and creative musician. His infectious rock/ska-flavored rhythms helped No Doubt achieve multi-platinum status with their 1995 major-label release, "Tragic Kingdom". With five albums now under his belt, Adrian has been able to masterfully blend his various rock, ska, and punk influences to develop a playing style, which compliments his band and serves each song very well.
